“The Basics” By Hale & Hale: Santa Monica Dentists

Regular brushing and flossing is the most important thing you can do to maintain a healthy smile. Beyond that, see us twice a year so we can stay on top of any potential problems you can’t see. Gum disease, cavities, and even oral cancer are easily prevented if symptoms are identified early on by a dentist.

Your Dental Exam gives us, your Santa Monica dentists, the chance to catch up on your dental health and check for any potential issues that you might not be aware of. Many dental diseases aren’t detectable without proper screening.
Here’s a tip: for the best brushing results, brush twice using each hand to hold your toothbrush. You can reach different angles with the toothbrush depending on which hand you use, so using both means you can clean more of your teeth.

What Happens During a Routine Check-Up?

A Dental Exam and a Professional Cleaning

As a new patient, we’ll make sure you have a complete experience. Before we do anything, you’ll get a complete tour of our office where you’ll meet our dentists and staff. Next, we’ll perform a complete review of your dental history and the current condition of your overall dental health.

The Dental Exam:

We’re your partner in dental care, and want to make sure you understand all of your options when it comes to your oral health. We will take as much time as you need to discuss your specific dental situation in as much detail as you like. Don’t forget to ask any questions you have about cosmetic procedures too!

If you’re coming in for a hygiene appointment, you’ll meet with the rest of our awesome team for a Professional Dental Cleaning. New patients will get a dental review and X-rays before the cleaning, in the same appointment!

Our Professional Dental Cleaning:

Brushing and flossing at home minimizes the build-up of plague and tartar, but it’s still best to get a professional cleaning every six months. A deep, gentle cleaning keeps your dental health in excellent shape.

Has it been a while since you’ve had a check-up? That’s fine – we’re just happy to see you now. You’ll be amazed at how clean and fresh your mouth will feel after a professional cleaning.

Here’s a tip: fluoride is great for your teeth but it’s only in tap water, not bottled. If you primarily drink bottled water, check with our dentists to make sure you’re getting enough fluoride from other sources.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a professional cleaning hurt if my teeth are sensitive?

Not usually. Our hygienists use gentle techniques and can adjust pressure or use a numbing gel for anyone with sensitive gums or teeth. Let us know before your visit so we can tailor the appointment to your comfort level.

How long does a typical cleaning appointment take?

Most dental cleanings Santa Monica patients schedule last between 45 minutes and an hour. New patients or those due for X-rays may need a bit more time for a full review.

Do you accept dental insurance for cleanings?

Yes. We work with most major insurance providers and many plans cover preventive dental cleanings twice a year at little to no cost. Our team is happy to verify your benefits before your appointment.

At what age should children start getting professional cleanings?

We recommend bringing kids in for their first cleaning around age one or once their first teeth appear. Early visits help children build comfort with dental care and let us catch issues while they’re easiest to treat.
